Rui Costa addressed the members at the beginning of the General Assembly, which will serve to consider the club’s budget for the fiscal year 2022/2023.
“It was a year that disappeared from expectations and I was the first to take on that responsibility,” he said, immediately noting: “We didn’t have the same excellence shown at the international level that after six years we We have returned to this position. The quarterfinals of the Champions League and our youth have won the UEFA Youth League for the first time. ”
“We knew it would not be an easy year. It was a year that was lower than the parchments Benfica required. I am not satisfied and I know that none of you will be, ”the Red President continued, pointing immediately to the future, pointing to the arrival of Roger Schmidt for the first time.
“So we have already started a change in the structure of football and we have chosen a coach who will change the paradigm of what we want for the future and aim to make the team more and more competitive and make sure that the formation , as I said, always has a special place in the definition of the detachment.
Finally, Rui Costa promised that after the presentation of the budget, he would be ready to clarify all the questions of the members, “in an environment similar to Benfica, with the demand, respect and height that the club deserves”.
Here is the full speech:
“Honorable Chairman of the General Assembly
Mr. Chairman of the Supervisory Board
Distinguished colleagues of the leadership and other governing bodies of Lisboa and Benfica
Before we move on to the budget presentation, I want to make a very brief introduction.
I am proud to present to you at my first general assembly, which approves the budget as the elected president of Sport Lisboa e Benfica.
A budget that represents balance and a great will to win.
The budget, which reflects a strong increase in investment in women’s sports and football, is aimed at strengthening the work we have done and improved this year, but is still far from what we all dreamed of.
The season is not over, there are still seven titles ahead and with the support of our members and fans, I am confident that we can raise the name and tradition of Sport Lisboa e Benfica.
I have to express my gratitude here for your support in the pavilions over the last few months.
Today in the pavilions we are witnessing a dynamic that we have not seen for a long time.
The opening of the pavilions to the members was a wise move and was of great benefit to the club and the members, so it will be maintained for the next season.
If there are more fans in the halls, our teams have a better chance of winning.
Despite the titles and victories, we can never deviate from one important truth: the members are the spirit and strength of this Club.
It’s a budget that also strives to meet their dreams and brings Clube dos Socios even closer.
A clear example is what is planned for Casas do Benfica, which I would like to acknowledge for the extraordinary work they are developing.
Finally, I can’t stand in front of you and – although it’s not within this Budget – I won’t leave anything about the heart of the Club, Football.
It was a year that failed to meet expectations, and I was the first to take on that responsibility.
We didn’t have such an excellent performance at home to show at the international level that after six years we had returned to the quarter-finals of the Champions League and our youngsters had won the UEFA Youth League for the first time.
We knew this year would not be easy. It was a year that was lower than the parchments Benfica required.
I am not satisfied and know that none of you will be satisfied.
So we have already started a change in the structure of football and we have chosen a coach to change the paradigm of what we want for the future, in order to make the team more competitive by taking that training, as I said, in the definition of the team always occupies a special place.
Following the budget proposal below, we are ready to clarify all your questions in an environment similar to Benfica with the demands, respect and height that the Club deserves.
The greatest joy I can have as president of Sport Lisboa e Benfica is that each of us is proud of our much-loved club at all times.
Long live Benfica! ”
