How We Marketed Web3’s First Community-Produced Novel | By Jenkins The Valet | June, 2022

NFT drops are difficult. Take it from us – On August 4, 2021 we launched our Genesis collection to join “The Writers Room”. We were sold out in six minutes, but it wasn’t without pain. Our site has crashed and most people who have retained their tokens since our initial sale have notified us to date that this is the first time they have minted a deal. It was a tough mint, and we learned a lot as builders. This is why we took so much care in our next drop. We are going to be participants in the Web3 community for the rest of our lives.

That being said, we couldn’t be more excited to share Jenkins’ first novel and his first novel, Board and Dangerous, on Web3. July 11, 2022. In this post we have outlined everything you need to know about mint:

  • A refresher about all that annoying and dangerous
  • Peppermint counts and stages (from public sale to free claim from WriteList)
  • Some subtleties and innovations in our Solidarity method
  • Burn / steak game theory that spins from the NFT book
  • Some new details about the Jenkins audio experience

Without further ado.

Bored & Dangerous is the first novel set inside the Bored Ape Yacht Club, and the first true novel to come out of Web 3.

The 3,000 members of the author’s room come together to create lore as well as creative ideas that lead to plot and melody. After that, 4,075 Apes / Mutants trusted us enough that they could license their IP to work.

Each of these licensees will receive royalties in return: 50% of the net profit goes back to the licensees.

The creators who collaborated on the book are really a bunch of icons:

  • The book is being written by 10x NYT bestselling author Neil Strauss
  • Top 20 earning super rare artists MBSJQ Making art
  • Grammy-nominated producer Dead Bitz
  • Internationally acclaimed design firm, IC4 From Hiroshima, JP is making “Where Jenkins”

Bored and dangerous has been a labor of love. Why? Because we truly believe that globally distributed populations can do better than any of us alone can. It’s proof of concept from the author’s room, and we believe it will be a grill for next year.

We’ve also created our own custom web 3 e-reader experience for your interaction with the book. As you read the book you will learn about all the featured monkeys, share your favorite parts directly on Twitter and much more. There were no great web 3 gated platforms out there to use this kind of content… so we created our own.

Our goal is (and always has been) to provide as much value as possible to our original author’s room holders. They are everything to us. Below we outline our approach to this mint, which we believe meets our goals.

The Max Annoying and dangerous NFT will be provided 20,826. We say “maximum” because almost certainly not all NFTs will be shot or claimed Spoiler alert: We’ll burn the rest.

Our mint will have three stages:

  • The Public Sale, a real Dutch auction with a return on rest price: 2,367 NFT
  • The WriteList, a 48-hour mint period public sale: 11,517 NFTs
  • Free claim, a 7-day mint time where author’s roommates can claim a free book: 6,942 NFT

Phase 1 – Public Sales: On July 11, we will start our public sale. This one will Real Dutch auction Where anyone can get a mint above the rest price. Mining above the rest price, the smart contract will provide an unauthorized, on-chain return that is equivalent to what they paid above the final rest price. We have decided to set the price internally but we will stop publishing until we get closer to the launch date. We are aware of market conditions and will pivot if necessary.

Step 2 – List: Shortly after the July 11 Dutch auction, we will open the WriteList minting period. It will last 48 hours until July 13 WriteList is made up of 11,517 NFTs and there are three ways to get a place:

  • Each author’s cell gets a place on the NFT rightlist. If you hold multiple, you can buy multiple annoying and dangerous NFT from WriteList. (6,942)
  • Each licensed BAYC or MAYC gets a place on the NFT rightlist. If you hold multiple, you can buy multiple annoying and dangerous NFT from WriteList. (4,085)
  • The 500 winners of Azurbala-specific WL puzzles and members of other communities on our network will be featured on WriteList. (500)

In this episode, those who qualify for the rightlist will have 48 hours to mint annoying and dangerous NFTs. If you are on WriteList, you can mint if the gas price is right for you. We don’t expect WriteList to sell Because a number. For example, 69 Writers Room NFTs have been burned and some of our holders, including 50+ WR NFTs, may not mint for all their tokens.

No matter how many NFTs are minted through the WriteList episode, we will burn the unminted ones.

Step 3 – Free Claim: For 7 days of the rightlist, from July 13-20, anyone who owns an author’s room NFT will be able to claim an annoying and dangerous NFT for free (+ gas). You can claim a free annoying and dangerous NFT for each author’s room you hold, and you will have 7 days to monitor gas prices.

For stages 2 and 3, there will be no snapshot. Instead, select the Writers’ Room (or BAYC / MAYC token) for which you are minting to complete the mint. We will publish a feature to check if a token has been used in a WriteList Mint or make a free claim to help identify the tokens you want to buy in the secondary market.

The team will hold 69 annoying and dangerous NFTs for employees and partners.

At Tally Labs our goal is to innovate in every part of our business and no doubt we are lucky to have Foobar as one of our partners. He’s one of the world’s most incredible solidity developers, and he’s got a fancy smart deal for this mint.

This will be one of the more complex agreements because of the economic mechanics, the depth of community involvement and the wide range of recipients. Here are three key features to highlight:

  • Unbelievable refundable Dutch auction
  • Batching system for WriteList Mint
  • Templated access control for admin convenience

Not to mention all the latest and greatest gas optimizations such as storage slot packing, custom errors, irreversible variables and more.

Unbelievable refundable Dutch auction

For previous Dutch Auction Minting contracts the contract owner has to calculate manually and update the new price at different intervals. Often, and somewhat ridiculously, this method will fail because the owner of the smart contract went to bed tired, or they forgot, or they set a wrong gas price that stuck. In our smart deal, we provide complete on-chain calculations so that price updates are free and fair for everyone.

Another downside to previous Dutch auction minting agreements is that they did not pay you NFT when you sent the money. The Dutch Auction Agreement was only an exclusive payer, and you had to expect that the NFT Agreement would come later and the employer would approve you. We put the reason for the Dutch auction directly into the NFT agreement, so that you can be sure that NFT will go to your wallet in the same nuclear transaction.

Batching system for WriteList Mints

The team is providing initial access to several NFT collection holders, including Writers Room Holders, Licensed BAYC Holders, and Licensed MAYC Holders. This creates complex branching logic, and for security reasons we have isolated each of these into a separate external function.

We’ve also set up a separate batchhelper agreement that can group multiple calls together, creating a seamless frontend experience for end users who make only one transaction. We have thoroughly investigated the sushi miso auction batch call vulnerabilities and clearly resisted the same failure.

Templated access control for admin convenience

Most contracts inherited from OpenZeppelin have the address of a single owner, including permission to give wayway NFT, total supply changes, metadata updates, and royalty information updates. This is dangerous in our opinion, because you want to withdraw some power directly after the minute and keep others for a long time.

In our opinion there should be a division between what administrators can do versus what they cannot do. For example, when updating royalties, the admin minting and total supply should be permanently frozen after the end of the mint.

We’ve included a system where these privileges are maintained independently of each other and can be explicitly transferred or revoked at any time.

Once the minting for annoying and dangerous NFTs is complete, there will be a small delay for the token-gated e-reader experience. This is a complex product that we have been making for a long time. Our expectation is that the book will go live about 3 weeks after the NFT sale. In other words, there will be a ~ 3 week delay in being able to read the book. In the end, we decided that it was more of a late premium experience than a native reading in PDF or OpenSea. We will often share progress.

Within minutes, you’ll get the ability to burn your annoying and dangerous NFT .08 ETH for the ability to mint an Azur Root on a flat ribbon or you can share it for governance tokens at our upcoming DAO. This DAO community will be dedicated to pioneering the future development of generated (and proprietary) content. We plan to share significantly more information about this DAO in 6/20 weeksAnd so in this post we will focus more on the burning side of things.

On the burn side, you can burn your book for the ability to mint an Azur Root for 0.08 ETH. Azur roots are a sacred object of Azurbala. They pass our version in a minute. Azurean tradition calls for parents to offer their Azure root offerings to the Azurean gods at the monastery. In return for this respect, you will be blessed with an Azurian of your own. You are all able to take part in this sacred ritual to get your PFP.

We have some fancy and exciting mechanics that we will introduce around the Azure route. We plan to make a dedicated post on this game theory only, but in this post we can share that the longer you hold your Azur Root, the more fruitful your Azurian birth will be.

We hope to start burning books for Azur Roots Before the end of July. This rapid change between book mint and book burn is important for keeping the excitement high. One of the reasons we ended up landing for a Book Mint Day on July 11 instead of hitting our Q2 deadline and then having a gap.

Azure Redemption will start for Azurian PFP Mid-August. We really believe you’ll be grateful for the extra time to let your Azur Roots age, but I’ve already said a lot … Once redemption is open, there’s no deadline. Azure roots can be retained and redeemed forever. This means Azurians will be created in real-time, on a rolling basis, forever.

Shortly after Azurian Minting begins, we will open licensing for the Jenkins audio experience with our new one-click Marketplace. Although we don’t yet know which communities will participate (our holders must vote), we can share one thing with you. Your Azurians will be featured.

Yes, that’s right. Instantly owned by an Azurian, you’ll have the opportunity to receive royalties for bringing their long-form content to life in a premium portion and licensing them. We decided to stick to the podcast so that it could happen to our new Azurian family.

From now until July 11, you can expect a preview of some more books about Azurbala, in our Roadmap 2.0 post to learn more about DAO (including name and branding) formerly known as Media DAO.

In the meantime, here is a teaser:

Marrow Glades, Azurbala

To the author’s room and to the larger Web3 community … we’re feeling annoyed and dangerous. You?
