Aleix Espargaró MotoGP got the pole, good tempo and advantage to win in Catalunya GP. However, he did not expect a great start from Fabio Quartararo, who overtook him on the first lap and gave him the necessary advantage to cross the finish line quietly in the first place. This was the second victory of the season for El Diablo, which remained in the lead of the championship.
Espargaro struggled to stay in second place as two Pramac drivers came under pressure. But in the seemingly calm end, the Granollers driver made a bizarre mistake, thinking the race was over and losing his position, and gave Jorge Martin a place in second place, ahead of his teammate Johann Zarko – both Pramac bikes took the podium in Barcelona.
▶ ️ How is the MotoGP network in the 2023 season?
As with the rest of the weekend, the sun was cracking in Barcelona on Sunday. Prior to the start, the air temperature had reached 30 ° C and the asphalt surface had reached 56 ° C. The relative humidity was 46% and the wind speed reached 13 km / h.
The choice of tires on the track was very different. Most riders chose the middle fronts, but all four KTM bikes chose the harder ones. Jack Miller, Johann Zarco, Marco Bezzecchi, Stefan Bradl, Paul Espargaro, Brad Binder, two Suzuki and Franco Morbidelli chose the difficult ones. Maverick Viñales was the only one who took a soft risk.
Before the start, Brad Binder, Rlex Rins and Joan Mir threw the sticks and went to the middle back.
The moment the lights went out on the straight path of the Catalan circle, the spectators saw that Aleix Espargaró had a good start and maintained his advantage in the first meters, but Fabio Quartararo jumped forward on the first corner.
On the 1st turn, by the way, saw an accident that led to one of the contenders for victory: Pecco Bagnaia. The failure began with Takaaki Nakagami, who fell, touched Pekko’s back, and even picked up Alex Rinsey, causing the Suzuki driver to crash terribly.
Thus, Jorge Martin rose to third place against Johann Zarco, Paul Espargaró, Joan Mir, Luca Marini and Maverick Viñales.
When Quartararo opened the lead in the third round, he was second to Martin Aleix. Fabio’s difference was already 1 second.
In the 8th lap, another failure of the season for Bastianini: the accident on the 5th turn was the second consecutive retirement, removing the driver Gresini from the fight for the 2022 championship. Shortly afterwards, Fabio Di Giannantonio also had an accident and completed more. Early participation of the Italian team in the debate.
In the tenth round, Aleix finally broke Martin’s resistance and took second place. Although 15 laps to go, the host driver was 3s3 behind Guartararo, who dominated the dispute.
Although Aleix tried to reduce Fabio’s advantage, the Frenchman managed to go even further by 3s950 in the opening of the 14th round. However, Martin did not lose touch with # 41 and Zarco tried to return to the fight.
Nine laps before the end, Martin used a vacuum on the straight track and took second place, passing Aleix again on the first lap. Fourth, Zarco was trying to get on the podium.
From the images, it was possible to observe that Aleix’s right wheel was quite old. Nevertheless, the Catalan tried to contact Jorge in the hope of regaining second place in Barcelona.
With four laps to go, Aleix took advantage of the RS-GP’s agility to stick to Martin on the straight track and slow down at the entrance to the 1st turn, gaining a slight advantage shortly after. Zarko followed him, but was not close enough to immediately threaten Pramak’s companion.
Aleix opened a good advantage and strengthened his position at the end of the race, but he made a strange mistake: he thought the race was over and began to celebrate, descending to fifth place.
The Aprilia driver returned to the pits without consolation, and in addition to the team, his wife, Laura, and their children, Max and Mia, received the support of Dorna’s CEO, World Promoter Carmelo Ezpeleta. to the pits to offer a hug to the Spaniards.
