Everything that has been created to date in terms of software, hardware and tools has been designed to help people in the real world. But for a new universe (or rather, for the metaverse), the technologies and solutions developed will come from artificial intelligence. This premise supports Inside the Lab, a virtual presentation given by Meta this Wednesday, the 23rd, in which the company’s founder, Mark Zuckerberg, demonstrated what has already been done to build the metaverse.

The idea of the presentation was to demonstrate the advances of Meta’s artificial intelligence area, which, from Zuckerberg’s point of view, will be decisive for the creation of the immersive online universe in which the company already exists. focused their energies and investments. According to the founder of Facebook, as virtual worlds are dynamic and constantly changing, the artificial intelligence used in the metaverse will have to be modeled in the context of human beings.

So, the company has unveiled some innovations that have already used artificial intelligence to put people into immersive and virtual experiences. The first tool presented by Zuckerberg is CAIRaoke, a new form of voice search that aims to provide more natural conversations and more complete dialogues between people and virtual assistants.

Another feature introduced during Inside the Lab was the Builder Bot, which allows the construction of a virtual world based on voice commands. Zuckerberg tested the function during the presentation, creating the bottom of an island. Through voice, the founder of Meta, through his avatar, asked to see, in the environment, clouds, an island and some drinks in the landscape. Even the sound of the ocean wave added to the experience. “In the future, we will be able to create new worlds and experiences to explain and share with others with just our voice,” he said.

To build this metaverse, however, it will be necessary to overcome some challenges. Zuckerberg pointed out that the company has invested in artificial intelligence tools that are capable of predicting and interpreting certain types of interactions that can only occur in the metaverse and in 3D virtual universes. This technology, called Self Supervised Learning by the company, aims to improve recognition algorithms so that interactions in the virtual environment are not limited.

Learn from the diversity
In the presentation, Zuckerberg stressed the importance of the metaverse that is built with technologies capable of understanding and interpreting the movements, images, voice, body language, texts and other manifestations of people from different places. and who speak different languages. Regarding this language barrier, which must be well resolved in the universe of artificial intelligence to allow, in fact, the interaction in the metaverse of people around the world, Meta is working on two programs. The first, called No Language Left Behind, is a new artificial intelligence system capable of understanding and translating the most diverse languages.

The second program, which in Zuckerberg’s view is even more innovative, is the Universal Speech Translator, which offers instant speech translations from any language to any other language. “The ability to communicate with someone, in any language, is a superpower that people have always dreamed of and artificial intelligence gives us in our lives,” he said.

During the presentation, which was attended by other Meta directors, other resources and initiatives of the artificial intelligence pillar were also explained, such as the AI Learning Alliance program, an open machine learning initiative aimed at to professors and university students. .

Last year, when he announced his plans to lead the race for the metaverse, a project that also involved the rebranding of the company to Meta, the company revealed it plans to dedicate $ 29 billion to $ 34 billion in 2022 for the construction of the virtual universe.
