Understand why it is more common to add vitamin D in winter

On cold days, people tend to spend less time exposed to sunlight and, as a result, the body may have low levels of vitamin D. The nutrient is absorbed into the skin and, in addition to increasing mood and strengthening bones and joints, plays an important role in lifting immunity, necessary for the prevention of disease in periods with lower temperatures, when there is a greater circulation of respiratory diseases.

According to nutritionist Priscilla Gontijo Correa, of the DUX Nutrition Lab, since it is not possible to know the amount of vitamins the body produces, nutritional supplementation may be necessary, especially for those with nutritional deficiencies. “We don’t have a way to find out how much our body absorbs daily and that can be a problem, especially for those who need higher amounts of vitamin D to get rid of the deficiency,” he explains.

The nutritionist warns that it is important to be aware of the signs of vitamin D deficiency, which can include: constant flu and colds, hair loss, fatigue and discouragement.

“Especially in winter, we recommend people to look for other sources of nutrients, such as certain foods, as well as supplements,” he points out.

Before taking any supplement, it is necessary to consult a doctor to check if there is a need to supplement the level of nutrients.

Vitamin D in food

Fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, herring and cod liver oil, as well as mushrooms, yeast and mushrooms are the main sources of vitamin D.

Although healthy and important in the daily diet, fruits and vegetables are not foods rich in vitamin D. Eggs, milk and their derivatives (such as cheese, yogurt and margarine) are only sources of vitamin D when enriched with nutrients, information that must be contained on the nutritional value label of the food, ”emphasizes Priscila.

The problem, according to the nutritionist, is that it is not possible to measure the amount of nutrients that are ingested through food. “In addition, it is very difficult to get satisfactory amounts of vitamin D for health from food alone, because these are not products we are used to eating every day,” he adds.

The importance of supplementation

Therefore, in order for the body to maintain the required amount of vitamin D, especially in winter, supplementation is the most indicative way by health professionals, because in that way it is possible to guarantee a daily intake according to everyone’s needs.

“There are several options for vitamin D supplements on the market today that offer the ideal amount just in case. There are supplements with concentrations ranging from 200 to 2000 and (international unit) per capsule or per serving, ”says Priscilla.

The nutritionist points out that it is ideal to consume a concentration of up to 2000 and a day. “This indication applies to most people and age groups, with the exception of those who may have specific needs and whom the doctor should point out,” he explains.
