Verified information and security, Meta’s challenges in Latin America – International

Meta, Facebook’s parent company, wants to ensure the dissemination of reliable information on its platforms, which are popular in Latin America, and secure access to its metaverse, said its president of Global Affairs, Nick Clegg.

We want “when our services are used in elections and moments of greater debate, that we have a responsible role to play in ensuring that people have access to authoritarian information,” Clegg said in an AFP interview in Los Angeles, where he attended the Summit of the Americas.

“And if we look at the way our services were used in Latin America during the pandemic (…), WhatsApp was one of the most important ways in which people found access to reliable information about where they can get a vaccine. ” he said ..

“We work with independent independent fact-checkers in Latin America, we work with WhatsApp with several governments in the region to help people find reliable information about the pandemic and the election,” he explained.

“If people don’t feel safe, they shouldn’t use our apps for society, but also for our interest,” Clegg added.

AFP is part of Meta’s digital verification program in more than 80 countries and 24 languages. Under this program, Meta pays about 80 organizations, including specialized media and checkers, in exchange for using its controls on Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram.

Thus, content classified as “fake” reaches a smaller audience. The user who tries to share this post receives an article explaining that he is cheated and those who have already shared it receive a notification with a link for verification. No posting is taken from the platforms and fact checkers are free to choose how or what to discover.

– Metaverse –

Number three at the helm of the California giant, Clegg has assessed that there are great opportunities for Latin America with the metaverse, a virtual universe where it is possible to have a parallel life, the big bet of Mark Zuckerberg.

“The benefit to Latin America is that there will be a whole new digital economy and people will sell and buy digital services and benefits that were not invented. The potential is huge on the continent,” he said.

But he has no risk of anticipating investment plans. “We are on a journey, in the early stages of this journey towards the metaverse, and I cannot say today exactly how we will invest in the future,” he added.

Unlike current social networks, where a threatened or annoying post can be in the air for hours before being hacked, with the metaverse it can be better controlled, he explained.

“In the future it would be very different. It will give people a lot more control, like controlling their interaction. If I don’t want to talk to you about the future of the metaverse, I can just walk out of space from one moment to the next. the next, ”as in everyday life, when you don’t want to interact with anyone.

One of the “fundamental” principles of the metaverse “will be interoperability.”

This means that “in the future, if we talk about the Meta metaverse and want to go together to see a show about Microsoft’s metaverse (…), we can move from one part of the metaverse to the other.” , said Clegg. .

That’s why he has talks with Microsoft, Google, Magic Leap, and even governments and experts, to set the rules, he said.

“It could be an experience that has freedom of movement from one metaverse to another, but also security. This balance between freedom and security is fundamental,” he explained.

– The essence of WhatsApp –

Speaking of WhatsApp, another popular tool in the region, Clegg said they have studied how to monetize it, but without losing its essence.

“Now we don’t monetize WhatsApp much compared to Facebook and Instagram because there is no advertising in the same way,” he recalled.

“We want to see how people can use WhatsApp to pay for their purchases without“ exchanging ”the reason why“ people like to use WhatsApp, which (is) simple, private, secure, ”he said.

Another of Meta’s goals, according to Clegg, is to ensure that Latin American small and medium-sized businesses that use their platforms for business continue to do so without collusion.
