A new Forza is in the works and will arrive in 2023. The game marks the debut of the “racing” variant on the Xbox X/S generation, in addition to PC. It was Horizon 5’s turn last year, and it felt very different.
That’s because Forza is focused on closed-track racing, rather than an open world like the games in the Horizon series. Also, the simcade-esque “FM” is a mix of simulator and arcade. That said, it’s not as complex as Assetto Corsa, nor as mediocre as Need for Speed and Forza Horizon, which are pure arcade machines.
But what can we expect from the new Forza Motorsport? We’ve broken down the videos Microsoft released that reveal some really cool nuances.
1 – Motorsport is not the horizon
First, it is necessary to separate the wheat from the chaff. Motorsport and Horizon have different proposals. When Microsoft launched Forza Motorsport, its strategy was to give the original Xbox an equivalent competitor to “Gran Turismo 4.”
So it’s a game that focuses on more realistic driving, with physics closer to a simulator, but it’s also appealing to those who just want to accelerate cool cars in a casual way.
The game offers challenges of different difficulty levels, which require a little effort from the player. It’s great to see how the dynamic behavior of each car differs based on its engineering characteristics. On the same track, in the same corner, a front-wheel-drive car behaves differently than a rear- or all-wheel-drive model. Forza has always applied realism in its games.
Horizon, coming to the Xbox 360 generation, competes with Need for Speed. It’s an open-world game that lets you “ignore” the laws of physics. In this series, players don’t have to worry about getting into the curve correctly and what the performance cost will be in imperfect tangents.
on the contrary. In this game, players drive off the track in a Lamborghini that behaves like a Hummer H1 in the middle of the woods. It’s important to expand the car list and meet countless challenges.
Therefore, we can say that Forza Motorsport arrived to meet the need for more precise, less “party” driving.
2 – Graphics in X-Series
Graphics are one of the highlights of the eighth edition of Forza Motorsport. Games should explore the full potential of the Xbox Series X/S, especially the most powerful Series X/S, capable of running games at 4K resolution.
Shadows, reflections, smoke, rain and dust have been impressive in past releases. Everything is more refined now.
But the most important will be the application of ray tracing technology in games. It is a function that adjusts light projection according to the position of the observer’s eyes.
So the reflections on the body not only change with the displacement of the car, but also with the rotation of the camera that simulates the player’s field of view. Like when we move our head and keep looking, the reflection cast on the glass gets distorted.
A shot of the river next to the track is highlighted, where you can clearly see what the technology stands for in terms of visual quality. But the question that remains is: will this all be in the end game, or is it another spectacle that only exists in the promotional video?
That’s because applying ray tracing perfectly would require a lot of work from the Xbox, as it absurdly increases the amount of data to be processed and the high-speed processing. But judging by the video of the game, what is shown is really impressive due to the high level of realism.
But history tells us that what is announced is not always delivered. When “Gran Turismo 7” debuted, a lot of people worked to unravel how reflections were projected onto cars in the PS5 version. Some people have found a pattern that shows general and undistorted reflections.
Technically, do you know how this will affect your riding? anything. But it will make the game more beautiful in front of your eyes.
3 – Dynamic climate and weather
The video made by the producer Turn 10 is very interesting to show all the content the game will offer. Dynamic weather and time lapse are part of the package.
This means that during the race it is possible for one part of the track to start raining while another part does not. It’s like a storm comes and the sun shines again. The same applies to time. Games can start in the hot sun and end in the dark. “GT7” already offers these nuances.
Unlike reflections and graphics improvements, these features affect the player experience. Because wet tracks change the grip of the tires, more caution is required when driving or even changing compounds. The accelerated passage of time also affects visibility, especially when the braking reference point disappears. But these are not new features. “Project CARS 2 has been delivering it all since 2017.
4 – Forza Motorsport
Every good racing game must have a list of respectable cars. Forza Motorsport has always stood out for its excellent “curation”. New games in the series are no exception.
In the video created for the ad, it was shown that about 30 models will appear in the game. That’s insignificant compared to the 400+ cars in Gran Turismo 7, but it’s just a preview of the game’s garage.
Brands like Aston Martin, Audi, BMW, Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford, Ferrari, Honda, Lamborghini and McLaren are all there. In addition to the legendary DBR1 (which won Carroll Shelby at the 1959 24 Hours of Le Mans) and the GT40 Mk II built by the Texans for the 1966 race, legendary cars are also on the list.
But some cars caught the eye, such as the BMW M8 GTE and the new Chevrolet Corvette Stingray (C8), as well as the superlative Koenigsegg Jesko. In other words, there is no shortage of reasons to take on the challenge and snap up snapper.
Damage and Wear in Forza Motorsport
The game will also increase damage effects. According to the manufacturer, bumps and bumps cause deformation based on the point of impact rather than “standard” dents. But judging from the video, this time it won’t be the car being dismantled. Cars can crash at full force and only get scratched.
The game is also expected to evolve in terms of wear and tear. Depending on how the player drives the car, overheated brakes, bare tires, and other factors may be censored. In “GT7”, these parameters affect the performance of the car.
5 – Forza Clues
Turn 10 made two videos to show off the game’s features as well as some cars. However, there is not much information about the clues.
Much of the footage was taken from the game’s original Napa Valley Raceway. However, it is possible to check that the Spa Francorchamps and Laguna Seca circuits are in the game, as well as a section that appears to be from Mugello.
Three real tracks are already part of Forza Motorsport 7. In the 2017 race, there were 32 tracks. Let’s see if they’re all duplicates, or if applying new features like Ray Tracing can reduce the list.
